I am continuously shocked at the prices some people will pay for these vintage guitars, basses and amps.
I started on a Silvertone and a Silvertone bass amp in 1962 because my parents wouldn't spend the money for Gibson, Fender, Vox or Ampeg gear, especially not knowing if playing would be just a fad for me or not. It was crap then and still is. The bass was made of cheap pressed sawdust and you couldn't get the buzz out of the neck. The amp was awful! Yes, it was all tube with 2 x 12" but everything inside vibrated and buzzed and you got mostly distortion if you tried to play it even modestly loud. Think - playing the "I can't get no satisfaction" riff without needing an effects pedal. As soon as I earned enough money playing gigs, I bought VOX and Ampeg gear. Who cares what happened to that Silvertone junk - its all bad memories. |

I guess, since ebay, it's got easier being a guitar collector
I'm guilty of overpaying for some cheaper guitars... and I would, eventually, like to get a 60s Danelectro longhorn bass.. which I expect to cost me :( |

Sorry Jules but who would want to pay that for such a cheap instrument, whatever it's popularity. The Woolies specials from the 60's were better built! Mike. |

I hear what you are saying, and I also think people over pay for high end guitars. Despite being quality instruments, no guitar should go for £xx,xxx let alone £xxx, xxx. But they do.
I will still happily overpay for my Danelectro longhorn when it comes up ![]() Jules |

There's only just so much quality you can put into a guitar, and I guess people just by them for the name. Sad, because I've seen plenty of guitars over the years that are of comparable build and half the price. Mike. |
