Default 1973 4001 Fretless CB

I have a sunburst '73 4001 FL CB in extremely good condition.Has groover covers etc.. This guitar was specially ordered. It's been in its case in a home laying under bed since about 1975 when the owner stopped playing bass in a band (high school) and picked up regular guitar. There is little wear on it and it plays the way you would expect this guitar to play and sound. Had it out and amped up yesterday. The Rickenbacker (emailed)people tell me its very rare but that's about it. I am seeking a valuation for it. I have pics but not sure how to post them here.

At a rough guess I'd say somewhere between £1000 and £1500 bearing in mind that fretless may be harder to sell, even though it's rare.

Default Rickenbacker 4001FL

That is really nice, and in great condition. I think you should be able to get anywhere between £1500 to £2200, depending on how quickly you want to sell it.

Being fretless will make it harder to find a buyer, but there is most definitely some buyers out there for this.

Yes Ricks are grossly overpriced at the moment (gone up by about 40% in the last year) but I wonder if anyone is buying them.
A lot of the over-priced second hand ones go unsold on ebay.

This is a genuine collector's standard bass in my opinion. As well as being an early fretless it features all the early 70s bells & whistles - chequer binding, Grover tuners, Toaster pickup and gap-tooth tailpiece. It appears to be in extraordinary condition for its age.

For an expert assessment of its collectability & potential value, I recommend you join the forum at http://www.rickresource.com and start a topic on the basses board, and also the Rickenbacker Appraisals subforum in the Marketplace area.

Jon.
