I bought my Les Paul on Ebay about 18 months ago and I finally managed to identify it (or Gibson Europe did). Apparently it's a Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite. They sent me a catologue picture showing a cream coloured guitar with a Kahler trem but my guitar is black with a Steinberg bridge/tailpiece. They confirmed it's a 1988 model (I worked that out for myself)
Heres a link to photobucket Anyone ever seen one like this? Dave |

I've owned a Studio Lite and that guitar looks nothing like it. It's a very strange beast! The differences between mine and yours are:
- Yours has a pearl inlaid Gibson logo. Studio Lites had a gold transfer. - Studio Lites say 'Les Paul Studio', not 'Model' - Yours has dot inlays. Studio Lites had crown inlays. - The body looks a lot thinner than a regular lite. - Has it got a flat top body? (a'la Les Paul Junior?) Lites had an arch top. - Different knob/switching set up to a Lite. - Bizzare pickups. Lites had regular humbuckers. I don't even know what yours are. Look like modern Firebird-type mini humbuckers? So I don't know what your Les Paul is but I don't think it's a Lite. Maybe it's a prototype or someones customized a Junior? Either way it looks cool. Wish I had it! |

Yes it's strange isn't it. The pickups could be plastic encased epiphone type deluxe pickups. There's a coil tap switch btw.
The body is arched and I can see that it's magogany under the switch/knob covers. I understand that some of it is balsa wood (tonewood) I need to get the electrics checked because it sometimes just goes dead (not a loss off signal, just choked off so you can't get any volume) Gibson had just bought out Steenburger, and that will account for the wierd tailpiece (the usual using up of bits lying around) but I can't account for the pickups yet |

Hi,
I've already seen the same guitar in yellow few years ago. It was a 1988 Gibson Les Paul too. As I remember, it had a carved top. (exactly the same body as Gibson the Paul II) with these strange pickups, a tone, a volume, a toggle switch and an other small 2 way switch (but it didn't work on the guitar I played). It has the Steinberger tremolo as some SG 90 or Flying V 90. Nobody could tell me the model it was. This guitar was almost like new in the original guitar shop (only 2 owners who sold it back to the shop). And the seller told me that even Gibson France ignore all about this model and the pickups. I always wanted to find an other one. Without results. But, I found this one which has the same pickup but si and a flat top. It is a said as a 1988 Les Paul Junior Pro. I have already found on eBay an other with doucle cut and a single pickup, colored in black. I hope this information would help. I am very intrested in any information about the pickups and exact model. If someone sells one, I'm intrested too. Thanks. BGEJ.[/img] |
