Default GIBSON VICTORY BASS

Hi there, just found this site. I live in Manchester (UK) & i've got a collection of basses. One of my pride 'n' joys is my gibson victory bass which i bought from an old guy near where i live. Its in mint condition, the body is made out of 3 pieces of maple with the middle one being birdseye maple. However - it didn't have the original pick ups in it. At the moment i've put a musicman soap bar style MEC (normally found in Warwick basses) in it but would like to get hold of some original pick ups....... Has anyone got any ideas? cheers, duffer

Default victory

I would suggest that has been stripped of original finish - does it even have a clearcoat? certainly less glossy than the neck. The scratchplate is a custom job.

What is under it? The pickup position would suggest a custom or artist, but these both had a brass nut - I wonder whether the neck is from a standard? (can't be 100% sure from the picture... it's not brass is it?)

I see a few stripped ones - they do look good bare don't they

Hi Jules,

The scratch plate i made myself & i put the pick-up in it. When i origanaly got it , it had a dodgy white scratch plate on it with a single dimazio pick up in it. I know its not a great picture but the nut is brass (a bit dis-cloured & painted though) but the thing that gets me is that the body is made out of three pieces of maple with the main center one being birds eye maple. If it was all standard maple then i'd agree with you 100% that it may have been stripped at some point but guitar makers wouldn't waste their time placing a nice piece of birds eye in the middle (also the cost) just to paint over it.......I suppose all i can think of is that someone custom made the body for themselves & replaced the original.......................unless someone else knows something different?
cheers for the info though, take it easy, duffer
