I would have thought just clearcoat, no actual staining.

No, they stained them yellowish, a bit lighter than the base tone on a, say, mid seventies sunburst Ripper.

Rippers were maple while Sb450s were alder.i don't think they stained the Rippers but Jules is the real expert.
