I got my SG Oct 2007, made in 01/2007. I got it used from the Talkbass classified section. It was in pretty good condition, but still had it set up @ the local shop. Afterwards, that bass is simply the easiest bass I've ever played. It has the lowest action I've ever seen with no buzz. You can anything on it without any effort.
I did swap out the bridge for a Hipshot supertone and that made a huge improvement in tone, sustain, stability. The intonation in dead and the sustain can ring for days with roundwounds (I've switched to TI flats). I feel the bridge also give the bass more depth in tone. I am going to an ebony thumbrest in between the neck and bridge PU because my thumb keeps sliding off the bridge PU mount and I'm not comfortable playing on the top of the neck. I have a Dimarizo Model One lying around my office and I'm considering swapping out the neck PU in my SG for it. Is there anyone on this board who could share their experience with DiMarizo Model One? Also, I absolutely hate the bridge PU. Are there any replacements out for it? I would like to get rid of it period. I never have it on, and when it’s on I feel my SG loses it mojo. Any suggestions? |

Having not had a new SG, I can't say for sure what I would do. But for a classic EB2D or EB3, I would replace the lead pup with something that would be able to keep up with the mudbucker (which in the SG Ri bass is really more a Tbird pup squished in that cover). My two choices would be the Seymour Duncan hot Firebird guitar replacement, or the DiMarzio hottest Firebird guitar replacement. Whatever the models are for those. Although they are designed to replace a Gibson Firebird (or LP Deluxe) pup for a metal-ish approach, the EB3 lead pup was a (kind of weak) guitar pup anyway. So by upping the balls on that pup it makes it at the very least more blend-able. If you did do the Model One, then that would be more sympatico for output. I don't mind those at all, but many Gibson fans find them horrendous. To me they are their own thing, and most importantly do not require chopping up your bass.
Good luck!
