Default My newest catch - '82 Victory Standard

Hi Guys,

I recently bought an '82 Gibson Victory Standard out of the USA.
After 2 weeks at the Belgian customs office and 2 weeks at the post office I was completely out of it when I finally received it :D

I hope the pics work, but could you guys check it out?
I think it's got 'wrong' tuners (Schallers from a custom instead of the usual Gotoh's on the standards), it's a refinish with average paint instead of lacquer and the neck is set in with some varnish I guess.

Even with the differences it sounds great though.
It also has a Lane Poor pup, which I absolutely love!

You guy's see any more differences?
The case was included in the sale, but is in pretty bad shape :-)

BTW: These are the seller's pics as I haven't had any time to take some myself. Feel free to use them though.

I dig it! I was bidding on it too. Was wondering about that Lane Poor pickup. Many seem to like it. I got an old Victory and replaced the stock pickup with an EMG P. Old pup wasn't bad, just lacking some punch.

Many people dig it indeed.
Lane Poor appears to be very popular and they do sound great!
Would have loved to have the original one too though...

Granny Gremlin also has those tuners on his standard. Maybe yours got an artist neck? Does it have a brass nut?

Things were not going well for Gibson in '82. It is quite possible that they had run out of one type of tuner and decide to use another.

Indeed it has a brass nut, yet the TSC does say "Standard"...
No problem for me though, I prefer the Schaller tuners

One thing I do dislike is the bas refinish with some kind of hardware store spray-can paint... :s

But I might find a friend to fix that :p

Yeah, what I meant was that in the factory they may have used an artist neck (for whatever reason... they shipped more standards than artists and customs, and found they had a surplus of artist necks - so put some on standards - it is possible)

I managed to get a washing-up scouring pad and strip down a bass that my brother painted with car paint (he became a goth one day and painted it black with an aerosol, then promptly gave up plaing bass). 10 years later he gave it to me. A bit of water and rubbing and it was all off in about 15 minutes. The paint obviously hadn't bonded well to the old finish underneath.

Any idea what colour it is underneath?

No idea whatsoever, hope they didn't sand it first...

pretty sweet bass.

You may be able to slap some clear coat on there and wet sand / buff it out to a nice luster.

Hehe, took it to work today (I work in the bass department of a music store in Belgium). Adjusted the neck and bridge saddles...
Plays great now!

Just have some sort of playwear (kind of a dent) on the 5th fret where it tends to rattle so I'm gonna try putting on some thicker strings and if that doesn't work I guess I'll have to flatten out the frets...

Hey guys,

I just bought a new bass this week.
It's an early sixties Egmond Princess, but I don't have much info on it.
I made a topic in the "other brand" part of the forum...

Could you guys check it out and provide whichever info you have?
I only know it's a Dutch brand and I have an acoustic guitar of the same brand. I know the history of the brand, but not the guitar itself...

Thanks a lot guys
and sorry for reanimating this topic
