Default 76 Gibson Ripper with frets ??SECOND??

Hi all. I am new to this forum. Looking forward to some input on a bass I got from my grandfather. My research shows it to be a 76 Gibson Ripper. Serial is 00 156858. But there is the word SECOND stamped vertically into the stockhead. I'm not sure what this meant. Gibson info showed only 22 sunburst rippers with frets. HELP.

Second usualy means there was some flaw in the finish (or another minor thing that wasn't up to standards). It might not even be visible for you.

You are lucky to have a sunburst Ripper. My favourite Ripper/Grabber colour.

:D Yes, I started playing early this past year. I have a Gibson Epiphone Acoustic guitar and now this bass. I am self taught and loving it. :D

Yes please!, let's have some pictures.

My Ripper is a second too but has a number 2 stamped on it. You can see the flaw on it but to be honest it doesn't matter as it's pretty aged anyway and the flaw doesn't affect the playing of it.

Wow, great bass, and like you say a really rare finish. Stick some new strings on it and it'll sound great.

I can't see anything immediate that would have made this a second, but I do have one question - what does the truss rod cover look like when you take it off? Are there two covers one on top of the other by any chance, the lower one with a hole in?

Just wondering - i've seen a few basses with this marked as seconds - it may or may not be the reason for being a second - so i'm always on the look out for more examples.

thanks for posting the pics. NICE bass.
