I don't get any feedback with any of my other basses at high volume, but my ripper with a reproduction duncan pickup feedsback like crazy. Whats the deal?

What are those pickups like? Are they potted?

I like the pickup, it sounds good, has good mids but is very quiet compared to my other basses. I don't know if there is a defect in the pickup or the wiring. I can only assume it's exactly the same as the original except without the wear, I would expect nothing less from Seymour.

I have the same with my G3. When I come close to my amp it starts feedbacking if I don't touch the strings. It has the original pickups. I also don't have it with my other basses.
Can it have something to do with the fact that there is some hollow space between the pickups (under the scratchplate) on G3 basses? (and maybe also on a Ripper(?) |

If I recall correctly, some original Ripper pickups were potted (the windings encased in resin/wax) and some were not. I suspect most early ones were not. Caertainly later ones were. This can supposedly cause feedback.
Whats the case with the Seymour Duncans? As they are a copy of the old type, perhaps they are unpotted. The Ripper pickups here are unpotted. By the way, i've never potted one, but here is a how to pot pickups guideI just found. |

Along with potting, there are other variables that can cause feedback as well. EQ on the amp, speakers, amount of room you have around your amp to walls, etc. The easiest starting point is EQ. If it is a sqealing feedback, try turning down a bit of high end. My guess would be that the duncan is WAY hotter than the original pup, so you may have to adjust your amp settings accordingly. If it is also hotter than your other basses, that owuld explain why nothing else gets feedback.

Thanks for the info you guys! You guys are probably right that the pickups are just hotter then what I'm used to. I guess I still associate loudness with the hotness of the pickups.
I don't remember there being wax or resin on the bottom of the pickup before I installed it. You guys have always been a great help with my ripper issues. Thanks again! |
