Hi all, I'm setting up my 1985 G-3 for the first time since I got it, and removed the truss rod cover to tighten the truss rod. However, the truss nut moves very easily in both directions. I can just push it round with my finger.
Is this normal or something more suspect? I've got the right tool for the job, but don't want to turn the nut too far as I've never done a set up on the G3 before. I had a P bass a while back and that was much more stiff to turn. Thanks in advance |

Hi - a 1985 you say? Pictures please!
Well the truss rod nut will normally be tight - but just because it isn't doesn't have to mean anything. Tighening this nut (so it pushes against the washer) adjusts ever so slightly the curvature of the neck (relief). If you already have a comfortable action with the nut untightened then I guess you don't need to do anything. But you say you are setting it up, so this isn't the case? I assume your neck has too much relief and needs falttening out a little? Tighten it up a little, so you can no longer turn it by hand - then see how your neck is. Leave it a day or two and repeat. Overtightening can break the tip off a truss rod, so don't crank it. Gradual gentle changes over a few days (or even weeks) are the way to go |

Jules, thanks for the tips. Here's some pics of the 85 G3. I had it imported over to the UK last year from a guy in the states.

Very nice. There certainly weren't many made as late as that (there have been a few examples discussed in this forum) but they are very much the exception rather than the rule. Good luck with the set-up
