This serial number could fall into several possible years. The good news is that it is either an early 70.71.72. or possibly (and this is going out on a limb) a 68 release that was one of the first ever made and released in late 68 or early 69.
If it is a 68 it should have a 1 peice body (not the layered 'pancake' design of mahogany-maple-mahogany-maple top all sandwiched together. This would be easy to see by looking at the side of the guitar as there will be a visible line that circles around the whole body, ala 'pancake'. A pancake body would make it the 70-72. If it has a made in USA stamp on the back of the headstock it is definately the 1970-1972 model but no USA neck stamp would open the door to the possibility of it being one of the first guitars made with the mini humbuckers in a Les Paul. If you can't see made in USA, another way to date it is to look at the back of the headstock where it meets the neck, there should be a sliver moon shaped rise called a volute which was added in late 1969. If it has a one piece neck, then the number makes it a 68, a three piece neck makes it 1970 thru 1972. Lastly, if the 'i' in Gibson which is written on the front of the headstock is not dotted, this would also back up the 1968 dating. The i was correctly dotted by 1970. All of these should add up to confirm your year Deluxe. If this is a 1968 deluxe and that headstock is broken as it appears I would try to contact Gibson to get it fixed as professionally as possible as it could still be worth roughly 4 to 5G depending on the body condition and all materials such as pickup, pots and tuners being original. A 1970 -1972 would could still have a value over 2-3-G's. A 68 should have been a gold top. From your picture is looks like the top has been sanded. I couldn't imagine hiding such a beautifully figured top as that under gold paint but, that has been known to happen as many a gold top was sanded only to reveal such tops hidden beneath the paint. Good luck with everything. Barry |
