Default Have 1967/68 SG Standard: Value?

Considering selling a 1967/8 Gibson SG Standard w/vibrato and w/case. Serial #52XXXX. Good/Decent condition. Some scratches, etc. given its age and use. It was cherry red but was already professionally repainted black before I got it over 10 years ago. How much might I get for this?

I've always found ebay a good guide to current prices; the end price, not what some people think they should be worth.

Any second hand object is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, and prices for all vintage guitars (with the exception of very rare ones) have been a little deflated over the last year or so. Unless you need the money it may be wise to hold on to it until prices pick up.

Avoid the inflated prices you see in some dealers adverts (we all know who I mean) as they are extremely optimistic!

But remember that a refinished guitar is always going to fetch a lot less than an original finish one, even with the odd dings and scratches, which is part of it's character. Any other replacements, machine heads, pick-ups, etc. will also detract from the top price.

Good luck,

Mike.

Default SG standard

What Mike said...

But also things will vary on your location. US is typically 50% cheaper than much of Europe, depending on exchange rates of course.

Assuming a pro refin with serial number still visible, all original parts, with pot dates visible, and original case I would expect prices in the US to range from $1200 to $2000 depending on condition. Most likely somewhere in the middle.

I have been regularly surprised over the years though....

The SG standard is a desireable guitar, and you would have no shortage in interest.

How about a pic?

While it says Gibson on the case it does not appear to be a high quality one. Two clasps on case are loose. I will post a pic. Yes, serial number is visible. Assume all original parts, etc.
