Default Ah....a new Gibson (RD Standard) at the Owl Farm

Snagged a 1978 RD Standard locally, in ebony. Slowly working the neck to bring the action down to a more reasonable level (I think it sat for some time at full tension, and it's super high...) It'll take some time, but it's getting there.

These seem sorta rare; 425 in that year? Is that right? Any idea how many in ebony?

And, yeah, I'll post some pix in a day or so.

Default RD Standard

Cool, look forward to seeing it.

Unfortunately there is no data by colour for the RD series, but i'd say ebony was marginally rarer than the natural... but that's just a feeling; I haven't been strictly counting what comes up.

I guess they hoped they'd sell more - hence the pile of NOS loaded guards that they were almost giving away on ebay.

Default RD Standard bass

Yeah... very nice indeed. And great condition too. Ebony is definately THE colour for the RD standard.

I never noticed before... but looking at the headstock i thought something was missing. I supose the standards are withouth that cool headstock logo?

Part from the MOOG... (and the headstock logo) what is the big difference between the standard and the artist - sound wise?

Default RD Artist vs RD Standard

Well they are both similar sounding in some senses - but the standard is completely passive. Long scale maple with humbuckers. Kind of what you'd expect.

The Artist is powered by a 9v battery, and has a broader range, tonally, but can also get a bit noisy in places. It does what the Standard does, but can get even brighter for some real clanky sounds, and even darker for more dubby sounds.

That headstock logo is called a flying f-hole
