What you need is probably all right here:
http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/EB3.php

Sounds like a 70s model with the output jack moved from the front to the side edge.

Default Slotted headstock

The slotted headstock models had the side input jacks

Does it look like this?

Look at the headstock in particular. If so you can narrow it down to very late 1969 to mid/late 1971.

There are a few details that may pin it down a little more. Do you have pictures?

That is the trouble with Fly Guitars - I hear they never answer their email! Jules is much more responsive than the guy who does the Fly Guitars website. Stick with him.

As to your bass - your sentence structure makes it hard to understand what you are trying to convey. Your particular bass was not modified, if that is your concern with the output jack. Gibson did the moving of the jack from the front to the side as a design change - not a previous owner. I am not sure if that answers your question, or if you are asking questions. The double "?" at the end might mean confusion, which hopefully we can clear up.

Again, it looks like you have an early 70s bass. The serial numbers got used over and over again by Gibson over the years, so features narrow it down.

No, the serial number alone won't do it in this case, since that series was used into 1972 when solid headstocks were reintroduced and other changes were made.

If yours is a slotted headstock model then it was made in 70 or 71, or a slim possibility of early 72. If the electronics are original, you can open up the control cavity cover and look for a seven digit code on the volume or tone pots, let us know what that is and we can tell you when the pots were made, that may get us a little closer.

To confirm what Jules and eb2 said, the output jack was on the side in these years.

Ha ha... (was this a joke?)

Both this site AND flyguitars are my websites. I am the guy who is less responsive than myself I just put all the Gibson bass stuff on flyguitars rather than vintageguitars.org.uk. For no real reason...

Sorry if I have a reputation for not answering emails. I do try and answer them all, but I get so many (stupid amounts actually), I usually have a back log, and sometimes old ones get forgotten. Or maybe i'm losing some... perhaps I should look into that?

But yes, if questions are asked on the forum, i'll always try and answer those if I can.
