Default True value of a non-reverse Thunderbird IV

Well we are all used to seeing these at $8k , $10k etc. Pick a random number and multiply by a thousand. But who knows what actually sells.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1965-GIBSON-THUN...item414cbe899a

For once we have a great condition IV, in a custom colour with a 9.99 starting price and no reserve.

The adage goes things are worth what someone is willing to pay. I suspect we shall find out now what one of these is worth. Anyone care to make a guess?

I'd expect this to be bought by a dealer who will double the price in their store... but you never know, someone might get a nice bass at a reasonable (it won't be cheap) price.

Up to $2K already.

It always amazes me to see what people will pay for a 60's guitar or bass, like the metal sculpture that went for £65M yesterday.

Guess there are people around with more money than sense.

Mike.

Default thunderbird IV

The serial number is really faint, so could it be a refin? The seller doesn't say.

No he doesn't. if this were an original custom colour i'd expect the seller to make more of a song and dance about it. There is no shipping data by colour for these, but I feel custom colours were the exception rather than the rule. And lots get refinnished, and always in custom colours.

I can see no clear evidence one way or the other

Default Gibson Thunderbird

Wow, It went for $10010. The vintage guitar market certainly isn't that depressed. Didn't think it would go so high. I really hope the buyer went to have a look at it first.

Obviously bought as an investment and probably end up in a vault somewhere.
Doubt it'll ever be gigged again, or just played.

On one hand there are not a lot of good investments out there, and I have never seen a Cardinal Red IV ever for sale. So obviosly, rareity, color & condition were the big factors here, in my opinion.

10.000 dollar is a ridiculous amount of money for any bass guitar. Even for an ultra rare cardinal red NR Tbird.

Hey, you can buy 36 BaCHbirds for that kinda money!

(you can shoot me a PM if you're interested in buying one)

Bachbird it is for me!

There is another issue with fleabay, in that did the check clear? Is it a shill, or someone screwing with the seller? It doesn't happen a lot, but sometimes a fine fellow will give a top bid of what they want to pay - say $7k. Then with a second id - valid or soon to be "hijacked" - they right away put in a topping bid of something outrageous - say $10k plus. The seller never hears anything, and then does a 2nd chance offer to the next highest bidder, the same guy. They get the thing for $7k.

We shall see.
