Default EB2 projects

what do you think to these two

Gibson EB2 Bass EB-2 Vintage 1960s - project [EDIT sold for $460]

60's Gibson EB-2 project, unfinished body & neck [EDIT sold for $456]

I'm tempted by them both. Any opinions on what they should go for? Any estimates on the cost of a new EB2 back?

I was very tempted by the blackish one - gone a bit high for me now I'm afraid (too many recent purchases). Considering I got my 65 EB3 in similar condition (but with most of the hardware and electronics included, albeit in a bag, not actually mounted and working - only things missing wer bridge, one pot and a tuner ferrule) for US$300 (less than 2 years ago - EB prices haven't changed all that much since then), I wouldn't pay more than $300 tops (last time I checked it was $281, now above $400 - someone's on crack! Buying all the parts and refinning this will cost more than buying a player-grade EB2).

Now considering what I was hoping to do with this (bouncing back and forth in my head between EB Recording and Darkstared EB2) the one with the access panel in the back might be better for me (didn't notice that one before). Don't think I'll go for it tho (too many projects on the go and too many recent purchases) unless nobody else does ($150 is cheap!).

Default Dark Staring an EB2

Do you know anything about Dark Staring an EB2? I just completed a Starfire and it sounds fantastic. I also play an EB2 and was wondering if there would be any functional difference between a Dark Starred EB2 and Starfire. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

PS Enjoyed the EB2 Mudbucker threads on Dudpit. I am struggling with the same issues. Love the big bottom end, but the rest is lost. I may try re-wiring to get all three tones.

Default darkstared EB2

I pretty sure the results would be good - I didn't win either of the EB2 projects listed above, and I haven't played around with the wiring on mine.

Anyone here the proud owner of either of them?

When you say 'the rest is lost' do you mean in a live situation?

I am interested in the dudepit mod too, but just haven't had the time to play with it yet. Add a darkstar too???? we'll need sound clips!

The thread is here if anyone hasn't seen it

Default EB2 / Mods / Dark Star

I do mean losing the mids and highs in a live situation. We filmed a gig recently. Unfortunately, the sound guy wouldn't give us a direct feed from the board, but the camera mics were very high end. The difference between the EB2 in the bass position and the Dark Starred Starfire was like night and day. I also play a mid-sixties Hofner for Beatles and DC5 tunes. It was a litte better than the EB2, but the Dark Stars really cut throught he mix superbly.

That said, for certain tunes it is impossible to beat the EB2. We do a Motown medly of My Girl, Ain't Too Proud to Beg and Sweet Soul Music and it just doesn't sound the same on the Starfire. Same is also true with a tune like Under the Boardwalk.

I had a Dearmond Starfire Bass, with Goldtone Dearmod pickups (USA). Good. I have a last 60īs Hofner violin bass. Very good. And Rivoli. All are good. But the sound form each one is very different, no equivalent.

Default Hofner, EB2 / Rivoli / Starfire

I agree I seem to get the biggest bottom from the EB2, with the Starfire being between the EB2 and the Hoftner.
