Hey everyone, look at this modified Grabber.
I guess its done in an Alembic style, with that pointy end ![]() ![]() The pics were sent to me by Andy in the UK who is restoring it. Apparently it was given to a bassist friend of Andy's by Status Quo as a thank you for some session work. Its not clear whether this bass carved when Status Quo owned it or not. Anyone seen Quo with such a bass? Or Quo with a non-carved Grabber even Andy needs the gear/post/screw from one tuner, plus the metal string-through plate from the back. If you can help with these parts contact Andy at admin@simple-it.biz If you know any info about this bass, like who carved it - please tell all! |

I never saw Alan Lancaster with a Gibson bass, much less a long scale monster like a Grabber. He's known for his short scale Fender Mustang that can be heard on almost all early to mid seventies Quo albums and later on had a medium scale Kramer. I've also seen pics of him with what looked like an early Ovation Magnum (not the active model) in the early seventies. Lancaster had small hands and largely kept away from long scale basses.
I always loved his bass playing, if you listen closely he does so much more than just root note eighths or shuffle thirds everybody seems to indentify Quo-ic bass playing with, he slips in all these melodic runs. Just listen to his bass solo at the end of the long version of Down, Down. Uwe |
