Default Bass Amp For Rd Artist, Ripper...

Im looking for a bass amp for my Ripper and Rd Artist...I think Ampeg could work as good as Hiwatt but Ashdown ( Ashdown ABM 900 EVO II ) is cheaper and sounds great! Can you advise me please??

Hi Dave,

I always think of Ampeg as the daddy of bass amplifiers and they are well regarded in the industry. If I had the cash I'd buy one for sure

However I managed to pick up a good Marshall JCM 800 Bass Head (probably similar sound to a Hiwatt) and matching 4X12 cab when I first started playing bass and I love the sound I get through that with my RD and Ripper as well as my EB basses. I'm never disappointed with this amp.

It's down to persoanl taste, what gear do your bass playing heroes use?

Well, Nate Mendel uses Ashdown 900 EVO II and Krist Novoselic uses Hiwatt DR103 or Ampeg SVT 450: Different bass players and different sound...but great amps! :D

Thank you. ..i'll try to play this Marshall JCM 800 Bass Head and let's see...

I use a fender bassman head - its an early seventies one with not that many settings to play with, but I really like the standard sound.

I have an Ampeg and an Ashdown rig, both sound good, but if I had to choose I would prefer the Ampeg SVT with mahagony basses like the TBird and the Ashdown rig with maple basses like the Ric, Ripper and RD. The Ampeg is a bit rough for all the nuances an RD offers and it makes maple basses sound more alert.

Hi all, this is my first step in this beautiful forum.
I play my RD Artist and my Ric 4001 on a Marshall JCM800 Superbass with cabinet JCM800 4x12. Great and FAT rock sound!
I also tried SWR SM750 with Goliath3 cabinet and then Ampeg SVT3 with Hartke 4x10 alluminium cabinet but the sound was too... small!

Hi Shield, welcome to the forum

Yeah - thats the same setup Rumblekat uses (i've tried his) - very powerful sound

What did you attribute the weakness of the SVT / 4X10 to? the head, or the smaller 10 inch cones?

That aluminum speaker equipped 4x10 does'nt exactly have much oomph in it in my experience. Great for Blink 182'ish pling plong sound though.

Ampeg 2x10
Ampeg 1x15
Gallien-Krueger 700RB-II Bass Head

Very awesome combo if I must say!

if yo like some kind of over driven tone or rock sound its a good way to go, ampegs are known alot more for fat blues tone. which GK can offer but with much more tonality plus you can control your sub volumes on the amp also (controle the volume of one cabinet to the other then just a single master volume)
