You don't have to buy short strings - you can clip med or even long scales short after mounting (sorry if this next bit is a bit condescending, but I figured it's worth mentioning that it's best to not have the string wrap more than 3-4 times around the tuning post). There are potential problems tho, such as the tendency of some strings to unravel at the ends if cut short past the thread wrap. Also, for a shortie it is very important to use a 105 or heavier E string.
I don't have an SG reissue bass, but I really enjoy Tomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats (med scale - they don't make a shorties) on my EB3.

It all depends on what good old rocking sound is to you. Good old rocking sound for me sounds like flats. Stock strings on these are the Epiphone Nickel Strings and these work for me but if they'r good old rocking? Probably not. I think you're looking at TI Jazz Flats. Using longer scale strings on the SG RI will not be a problem since the slot in the tuner post is wide enough to handle the outer wrap.

anyway..careful with longer strings on a EB-0/3 or shorty in general..I had a bad experiece when I tried to use long scale string (they were expensive labellas flats BTW) on it, as the E string snapped at tuning post when trying to tune it. Me stupid...It was even written on the paper wrapper of the string that it was out of discussion using them on a short scale..
