Hi!
Just got my Gibson Grabber `76 with Alder body, on Saturday...The bass looked realy nice with minimal fret and playwear and the body and neck was almost perfect! Through the years of laying around (I was told by the seller), the hardware has a lot of corrosion and a little rust. So i took of all the hardware, bathed all the parts in white spirit to get rid of old oil and dirt. I polished all the frets with steel wool (Is that the right word??) Then i polished it with Autosol (GREAT STUFF for chorme!!!) and voila. The bass look new. Then i polished the body with Turtle Wax (The green shampoo like bottle)...A guy at the Norwegian Gibson-dealer, Luthman Norway recommands it for me! Thanks Ronny :D Here`s some pictures for you: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() More pictures will follow! What body-type do you guys think has the best sound, alder or maple?

Take a listen: www.audiofarm.no/kiss How many Grabber`s do you have, Jules? The red and natural one you got pictures of on the Gibsonbass site? And what`s the main difference between alder and maple body? I know that Gene got sponsored by Gibson when the "Hotter Than Hell-tour was around" And he got a ebony one and a sparkle red called eggplant finish. Both these had the rare skunk neck. And i have never seen those before!! What do you know about these? Here`s a picture:

I have to admit I sold both of my Grabbers. I hit buy it now for something going cheap (69 Les Paul bass maybe? can't remember) when I had no money. My Grabbers were not getting that much use, so they were put on ebay to cover it. I sometimes regret this, but neither the size of my home nor bank balance can satisfy my need to buy more basses! Anyway, you got the best colour - if I get another it will be black for sure! Maple is harder (more durable) and heavier than alder. Sound difference is subtle, but i'd say maple was slightly ballsier, but without comparing two basses identical in every way except wood species, I wouldn't like to state this as fact. I'm sure Gibson have performed such tests over the years though.... |
