Default Distortion Circuit on a Gibson EB style bass? (EB-0F)

Did Gibson ever offer a switchable distortion circuit on one of their EB (SG style) short scale basses? If so, which model? I seem to remember either hearing about it or reading about it somewhere. I also read that Jack Bruce had his bass tech add a diode(?) to the circuitry of his EB-3 bass so that he could get a distortion / overdrive sound out of the bridge humbucker without using his stack of amplifiers. Does anyone know where I could find a schematic for the Jack Bruce circuit or for the Gibson circuit (if it exists?).

thanks,

Ron

Default RE: Distortion Circuit on a Gibson EB style bass?

Gibson did offer a fuzz circuit on their EB series of basses as an option. I have only seen it on an EB0, but other models also had this option available. The letter 'F' was added to the model number to denote this feature (just like 'D' denotes 2 pickups and 'C' denotes cherry finish on an EB2CD), i.e. the EB0F.

It is widly accepted that this fuzz circuit sucked :P

It was NOT the same as the mod allegedly made to Jack Bruce's EB3 by his tech (the veracity of this actually happenning has been debated on other boards), but was based on the design of the fuzz pedal made by Gibson at the time (can't remember what they called it).

Default doubleneck fuzz bass

Theres also fuzz on some double neck guitar/basses

The 1963 catalogue has a model called the Double Bass (EBS1250) which is an EB3 and an SG standard with the fuzz useable on both. By the 1965 catalogue the fuzz is not mentioned; so its probably on the 1962-65 models (It was made until 67)

You can see it at

Here is a guy that makes replacement Varitones, but are not exact copies of Gibsons.

I bought one but have yet to install it.
