Check this G-3 out
http://cgi.ebay.com/Gibson-Grabber-G3-b ... dZViewItem It must be near the end of a guitar's run someone finds the most figured bits of wood for basses. I noticed some Rd's with the same thing in the end.

yeah, I was looking at that. Couldn't decide if it was a refin - if not it looks like it never had a bridge cover (no holes)
Really nice looking either way Not sure about that black scratchplate at the end... beautiful neck though |

yeah i bought that G-3 a few weeks ago!
It is inded gorgeous and it sounds SUPERB! however I think i payed a little too much for it given that it IS indeed a refin, there *was* a bridgeplate over it at one point and time (you can tell by dark spots under the refin) and the scratchguard at behind the bridge is a sticker. the entire bass is original including the pickups and all electronics and like i said it sounds phenominal! i just wish i can find a bridge cover for it and maybe take the sticker off, but i have no idea what it would look like underneath it, and i REALLY don't want to do another refin to it. All-in-all, I REALLY wanted a Candy Apple G3, and it is now my favorite bass to play, so I payed the price for it! p.s. if anyone has any ideas about a bridgeplate or how to successfully take the sticker off I'd be glad to hear your ideas! |

Yeah, a really nice looking bass - i'd forgotten how nice that neck looked - so i'm posting the original images as a reminder. I would imagine that some sort of alcohol (lighter fluid) would get that sticker off without damaging the finish - assuming it is a decent finish
Might be wise to test somewhere (under the scratchplate) first The cover will come up on ebay eventually! ![]() ![]() ![]()

There is something else extraordinary about this bass: It has a three piece neck - all G-3s and Grabbers (even my 82 late G-3) I know of have single piece maple necks, only Rippers had three piece necks. Moreover, the headstock is not scarfed to the neck, but one (well, three actually ...) piece(s) with it.
Time to update your G-3 description, Jules, me thinks. Mach schnell and perhaps I will then not gloat about how this bass' singularity escaped your grailkeepin'/trainspottin' gaze! Uwe |

I did have a G3 neck just like this (but not as nice flame), still an '82 with a similar serial number. I wonder why they did this? Was it the new style - surely they knew G3s were coming to an end by '82. Did they run out of original necks and modify the tooling they were making V-basses with? The serial numbers are just a few apart - so I suppose they made a batch like this - not just a custom order heres my one (unfortunately one that I sold on....) ![]() ![]() Quote:
Does anyone else know of a similar neck? |

My hunch is that they were using Victory neck cutting machines at the time as the Victory necks were three piece as well. My 82 still has a single piece, plain neck, albeit with ebony board (Victorish as well). I assume they felt guilty about the many single piece Grabber and G-3 necks that had warped or where the headstock had come off at the scarf seam. The three piece neck will probably make the bass sound a bit denser and not as airy although that was always the (ungibsonish) charm of Grabbers and G-3s.
