Default Gibson G-3 Pickup wiring

Hi there,

Our bass player recently bought a 1975 G-3 bass. We really like it, it is rocksteady and sounds really good. I was wondering though..

Sometimes I find the sound coming from 2 pickups at a time a bit too funky, like a Strat in the in between positions, with some kind of glimpsy top end. I am curious how the bass would sound with just one of the pickups going on.

Thinking about rewiring it so that you can choose:

1. Neck only
2. Neck and Middle
3. Middle only
4. Middle and Bridge
5. Bridge only

Has anyone ever tried or heard this? I'm curious about what you guys think.

Yours,
Geert Teekens

you wouldn't be able to do that with a 3 way toggle.you would need some kinda 5 position switch.i have a 77 that some one had removed the mid pup and replaced it w/ a Dimarzio p-pup,the G3 (Bill Lawrence)single coils are kinda weak if you only play one, they work better in "Humbucking"mode i have rewired mine a few times in different positions though honestly i usually use the Dimarzio.but i'm gonna change it to a Guild JSII humbucker that i've fallen in love with.already have one in my Ripper "neck" position.

Hi Geert

There are so many variations - the standard G3 wiring is to treat the single coil pickups as 2 coils of a humbucker - presumably you want to just treat them as single coils for 2 and 4

It would be very interesting to hear how the pickup configurations you mention compare to the standard G3 wiring. Let us know if you do a rewire.....

Default another scheme...

Teekens mentions a number of pickup configurations, but as i read them i noticed one was missing: bridge and neck together.

I was wondering if anyone has tried this scheme on the G3 and how it sounds compared to a fender jazz bass.

anyone have a say in this?

Aside from being single coils, the G-3 pickups are really nothing like Jazz pickups. Thank goodness.

don't know.never had all 3 pups.when i got mine it had a Dimarzio split P in the middle.toggle set up 1,2,3 i took the Dimarzio off the toggle so it is 1,1&3,3 i have 2 vol.'s no tone.(the Dimarzio is WAY LOUDER than the stock pups)i'm gonna swap it for a Guild "sludgebucker",also add a third knob "TONE" !this bass was already messed with when i bought it so i don't feel bad messin' with it s'more.the Lawrence pups have a nice sound.kinda smooth and round, not spikey.(WOW i'm such a bass nerd!)
